A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
