No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As confusing as it is to watch the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the narrative of a mighty king arising; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and clear fact that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Highest Within Us
So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
